Program Description

Anemia (defined as a low hemoglobin concentration, low erythrocyte count, or both) is a common problem in patients with cancer and those with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Choosing the most effective and safe strategy for managing the problem poses a challenge for health-system pharmacists, who often are also called on to consider the financial impact of therapeutic choices. Staying abreast of recent developments in clinical research involving anemia management therapies also can present a challenge to busy clinicians. This monograph provides an overview of the prevalence, incidence, etiology, and impact of anemia in patients with cancer and CKD. The results of recent clinical studies of anemia management therapies in these patient populations are presented in detail. Finally, the development and implementation of guidelines for using anemia management therapies and the pharmacoeconomic considerations in managing anemia are discussed.
