Program
Description
Antimicrobial
resistance poses a serious public health threat, with newly
resistant pathogens emerging in both hospital and community
settings. Numerous highly virulent bacteria have developed
resistance to one or more classes of antibiotics. A critical
need exists for new antibiotics that exhibit activity against
resistant pathogens and have a low potential to induce resistance.
New classes of antibiotics on the horizon are being developed
specifically to treat moderate to serious infections caused
by drug-resistant pathogens.
This session
will address the growing threat of antibiotic resistance and
its impact on the efficacy of current and future antimicrobial
agents. The program will include discussion of the economic
implications of appropriate management of infections caused
by resistant pathogens with emphasis on moderate to severe
infections. New and emerging therapeutic options for treating
polymicrobial infections will be discussed with emphasis on
opportunities for pharmacists to develop guidelines to ensure
optimum clinical and economic outcomes for their patients.
